Populations We Serve

Our treatment approach at The Sylvia Brafman Mental Health Center addresses the specific challenges faced by different groups. We recognize that mental health needs vary significantly across demographics, and we tailor our therapeutic interventions accordingly. Here are some of the diverse populations we serve and how we focus our support for each:

Women’s Mental Health Support

Women navigate a wide range of mental health experiences influenced by an array of chemical imbalances, caregiving roles, societal expectations, and much more. Women-focused support at Sylvia Brafman emphasizes empowerment and balance. No matter what you’re contending with, we’re here to support you. We’re proud to offer a compassionate setting where women can prioritize self-care and mental wellness.

Men’s Mental Health Support

Men often face stigma about showing vulnerability and pressure to “stay strong” no matter what. Sylvia Brafman offers a safe space for men to express emotions, tackle performance or career pressures, improve relationships, and build healthy coping skills. The focus is on breaking through stigma and teaching tools for emotional resilience in a supportive, male-friendly, and non-judgmental environment.

LGBTQIA+ Mental Health Support

If you’re LGBTQIA+, you may face minority stress, discrimination, and identity-related challenges that affect your mental health. We provide affirming, culturally competent care where your identity is respected every step of the way. While Sylvia Brafman doesn’t have a specific LGBTQIA+ treatment track, our peer support groups are identity-affirming safe spaces. Individual psychotherapy sessions address stigma and family non-acceptance, introducing effective strategies to build pride and resilience as an LGBTQIA+ individual.

Veterans Mental Health Support

Veterans may grapple with service-related trauma, PTSD, or difficulties transitioning to civilian life. Veteran-focused support involves trauma-informed care and is built on a foundation of trust and camaraderie. Sylvia Brafman provides a safe environment for you to process combat stress, survivor’s guilt, or other mental health challenges. Our approach emphasizes regaining a sense of safety and purpose, often incorporating peer support from fellow veterans who understand you.

Older Adults & Seniors

Seniors and older adults face life transitions such as retirement, the loss of loved ones, caregiving pressures, or declining health. Sylvia Brafman helps older clients navigate grief and loneliness, adjust to new life stages, and manage any medical or cognitive issues alongside mental health concerns. We coordinate with physicians on medication and ensure you feel respected, connected, and supported. For those seeking additional details on specialized care, we have developed a resource page dedicated to dementia-related mental health support. There is no timeline for self-improvement and self-care.

Professionals & Executives

High-achieving professionals often experience burnout, chronic stress, or mental health issues behind a “high-functioning” veneer. We offer confidential support tailored to professionals under pressure. Our personalized treatment focuses on managing work stress, restoring work-life balance, and planning a smooth reintegration into work with new health habits. We also offer an innovative Career Launch program to ensure your occupation doesn’t suffer while you tend to your mental health.

Retail Workers

Retail and customer service workers endure daily stressors like long or irregular shifts, high customer interaction, and often modest pay, all of which can take a mental toll. Treatment for retail workers addresses these challenges and provides coping skills to manage customer-facing strain and high levels of workplace stress. You’ll build resilience, improve stress management during busy seasons, and address issues such as anxiety or depression that may arise from the pressures of retail environments.

Hospitality Workers

Those in the hospitality industry (restaurants, hotels, travel) frequently work late hours, have unpredictable schedules, and face intense workloads. This can lead to burnout or substance use as an attempt to cope. We support hospitality workers by offering flexible scheduling for therapy and by focusing on stress reduction, sleep hygiene, and healthy coping mechanisms. You’ll find compassionate understanding for the unique demands of hospitality jobs while working to prevent burnout and thrive at work.

Pregnancy & Postpartum Support

Pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period bring major life changes and can trigger perinatal anxiety and mood disorders, such as postpartum depression. Specialized support for pregnant individuals and new mothers involves techniques for coping with mood swings, anxiety, or identity shifts after having a baby. Therapy might involve addressing hormonal impacts, processing birth trauma, and bolstering your support network. We also include family or partner education to help loved ones support you as you transition into parenthood.

Neurodivergent Adult Support

Neurodivergent adults often process the world differently, which can lead to unique stressors or feelings of being misunderstood in traditional clinical settings. We provide a neuro-inclusive environment that respects your cognitive and sensory needs while focusing on your mental health goals. We recognize that this can sometimes present as challenges in navigating independent adulthood; learn more about our specialized support for Failure to Launch cases. Our approach prioritizes understanding your unique lived experience to help you thrive in a neurotypical world.

No matter your life stage or background, our team tailors your treatment plan to meet you where you are. Your experiences shape your needs and goals, and we make sure our care speaks to those lived experiences; we want to provide the right support for you, not simply apply a generic, one-size-fits-all approach.

How Treatment Is Personalized for Different People

Each and every one of our clients follows a structured treatment program, but we personalize many details and aspects of care to fit you. Our clinical team works collaboratively with you to identify your unique needs, preferences, and mental health treatment goals from the very beginning. Here are some key ways we tailor the treatment experience:

  • Thorough Initial Assessment: We begin with a detailed evaluation where you share your history, symptoms, challenges, and goals. What you tell us guides the entire process; it helps us decide which therapies to emphasize, how quickly to progress, and what specific goals to focus on in your treatment plan.
  • Team Collaboration on Your Plan: After learning about you, our multidisciplinary team of therapists, psychiatrists, case managers, and more, meets to design a customized treatment plan. We’ll align on clinical priorities and consider any home or community support you have. If appropriate (and with your permission), we’ll also coordinate with your outside doctors or family members so everyone supporting you is on the same page.
  • Coordinated Care & Next-Step Planning: Personalization isn’t just at the start; it’s ongoing. We continuously check in about what’s working for you and adjust as needed. We’ll also help plan for your next steps after you finish our program. This might include coordinating a step-down to a lower level of care, providing aftercare resources, or arranging follow-up appointments. Planning ahead ensures that the care you receive here is seamlessly connected to what comes next.

Scheduling and Structure Designed to Fit Real Life

  • Flexible Program Schedules: Life doesn’t stop for treatment, so we do our best to fit treatment into your life. Our partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient schedules have some flexibility. For instance, mental health-focused IOP sessions might be scheduled in the evenings or weekends if you have work or classes during the day. We strive to accommodate important obligations like a job, school, or childcare whenever possible.
  • Step-Down Levels of Care: As you make progress, we can adjust the intensity of your program. You might start in a higher-intensity program (like our PHP, which meets most days of the week) and then step down to fewer sessions per week in IOP or standard outpatient therapy. This gradual decrease in structure helps you transition back into your everyday life while still having support during the adjustment.
  • Hybrid & Telehealth Options: We also use technology to make treatment accessible. If distance or transportation is an issue, we offer telehealth sessions. Virtual therapy options allow you to maintain momentum in treatment even when you can’t be on-site, so scheduling or travel challenges don’t derail your progress.

Evidence-Informed Therapy and Skills That Translate Outside Sessions

At The Sylvia Brafman Mental Health Center, our goal is to equip you with practical tools and insights that you can carry into your daily life. Depending on your personalized plan, you’ll work on things like:

  • Coping Skills & Emotional Regulation: Learn and practice techniques to manage stress, panic, and intense emotions. From deep breathing exercises to grounding techniques for anxiety, we help you build a toolkit of coping skills to stay steady when life gets tough.
  • Communication & Boundary Setting: Relationships often impact mental health. We coach you in expressing your needs, setting healthy boundaries, and improving communication, whether it’s learning to say “no” without guilt, or opening up to loved ones about how you feel. These communication skills strengthen your support network and self-confidence.
  • Trauma-Informed Care: If you have a history of trauma, our therapists use evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches to ensure you feel safe and understood. This might involve therapies such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), always at a pace that suits your comfort level. The focus is on healing past wounds so they no longer hold you back.
  • Relapse Prevention Planning: Recovery has natural ups and downs, and a solid relapse prevention plan helps you navigate them with confidence. We work with you to identify personal triggers, recognize warning signs, and develop practical coping mechanisms. Together, we’ll create an action plan with healthy routines, support systems, and concrete steps for vulnerable moments, empowering you to maintain progress and build lasting resilience.
  • Holistic Wellness Practices: We believe mental health is strengthened by overall wellness. We may incorporate mindfulness practices, fitness or nutrition guidance, creative therapies (art, music), or stress-management techniques like yoga and meditation. These holistic practices improve your mind-body connection and give you healthy outlets you can continue to engage in long after treatment.

What to Expect When You Reach Out to Sylvia Brafman

Reaching out for help can feel intimidating – we get it. From your first phone call or message, The Sylvia Brafman Mental Health Center patient advocates make the process as easy and as comforting as possible. Here’s what you can expect when you reach out to us for help:

A Calm, Confidential Conversation

  • Compassionate Listening: When you call or request a callback, you’ll connect with a friendly patient advocate who will listen to your story and concerns. You can share as much as you feel comfortable; everything you say is 100% confidential and judgment-free.
  • Questions & Answers: Our patient advocates will answer any questions you have about our treatment approach, what a typical day looks like, insurance, or anything else you’re wondering. We may also ask you a few basic questions about what you’re going through to better understand how we can help.
  • No Pressure, Just Support: This initial conversation is not a commitment. It’s okay if you’re still exploring options. We’re here to give you information and put you at ease. Many of our staff have been in your shoes or helped a loved one through treatment, so they truly get what you’re feeling and will make sure you feel supported from the get-go.

Insurance and Cost Clarity

  • Insurance Verification: Worrying about costs shouldn’t be a barrier to getting help. Our patient advocates will verify your insurance benefits right up front and explain what your plan covers for treatment at Sylvia Brafman. You’ll know exactly what to expect financially with no surprises. If you don’t have insurance or prefer not to use it, we can also discuss self-pay rates and financing options transparently.
  • Maximizing Your Benefits: Our team works with many insurance companies every day and can often answer coverage questions quickly. Even if your provider or employer isn’t one we’ve listed on our site, let us check for you; you might still have out-of-network benefits we can utilize, or we can guide you on other ways to afford care. The bottom line: we’ll do everything we can to make mental health treatment accessible.
  • Straightforward Answers: Feel free to ask us about costs at any time. We know dealing with insurance can be confusing, so we’re happy to break it down for you in plain language. Our goal is for you to feel relieved by the end of this conversation. We want you to have a clear understanding of the financial aspect, so you can focus on getting well.

Next Steps and Recommendations

  • Personalized Treatment Recommendation: After the patient advocates gather initial information, our clinical staff will recommend the level of care that best fits your needs. This might be our PHP if you need intensive daily support, an IOP if you need a part-time program alongside daily life, or another option. We’ll explain why we recommend this level and what it entails, so you can make an informed treatment decision.
  • Scheduling Your Start: If you decide Sylvia Brafman is the right fit, we’ll work with you to set a start date and arrange admission. We strive to schedule the start of treatment at a time that is convenient for you. You’ll receive guidance on what to bring and how to prepare. We keep the admission process as simple and welcoming as possible.
  • Family & Travel Support: We also discuss any support you might need in getting started. If you have family or close friends involved in your support system, we can include them in pre-treatment discussions or provide information on how they can help. And if you’re traveling from outside the immediate area and enrolled in our PHP, we help coordinate logistics. Many of our clients come from outside South Florida, so we strive to eliminate stressors so the focus is solely on healing.

Throughout the whole admissions process, our team’s priority is to ensure you feel comfortable, informed, and hopeful about what’s ahead. We know that taking the first step is often the hardest, so we do everything we can to make that step a positive one.

FAQs About Who We Treat

Do you have separate programs for men, women, or veterans?

Do you have separate programs for men, women, or veterans?

No, we do not segregate clients into completely separate programs based on gender or background. Everyone has access to the same high-quality treatment options. However,  we do personalize the experience within those programs. For example, men and women may have separate group therapy sessions, and our housing is gender-specific. Meanwhile, veterans might have specialized trauma support or peer groups.

The core program, whether it’s our PHP or IOP, fosters inclusivity, while individual needs are met through tailored care and breakout groups.

Can families be involved in treatment?

Can families be involved in treatment?

Absolutely. Family involvement is often an important part of recovery, and with your consent, we encourage it. We have a well-regarded Family Program that provides education and therapy sessions for your loved ones. Your family members might participate in periodic family therapy meetings, receive updates from our team, or join our dedicated family nights.

We find that when families learn to better support and communicate with one another, outcomes improve. However, we also respect your boundaries regarding the level of family involvement you want.

Do you offer support for people traveling from out of state?

Do you offer support for people traveling from out of state?

Yes, we welcome individuals from across the country (and even internationally) who choose our center for treatment. If you’ll be coming to us from out of state, our patient advocates will help make the arrangements as smooth as possible. Contact us to inquire about logistics, such as nearby housing or sober-living options at favorable rates, airport transportation, and more.

Our goal is to remove any extra stress from traveling so you can focus on healing. Many clients tell us that coming to South Florida for treatment was a positive, life-changing decision.

Can I work while in treatment?

Can I work while in treatment?

It depends on the level of care you enroll in, but often, yes. If you participate in our standard outpatient or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) services, you can usually continue working or attending school, since those sessions can be scheduled around your obligations. If you’re in our full-day Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), you’ll likely take a break from work or use medical leave while you attend treatment during the day.

In either case, we’re very mindful of your professional world: we can provide documentation for your employer if needed, you’ll have access to our Career Launch program, and we’ll help you plan a return-to-work strategy when you’re ready. Keeping your job or studies on track is possible with open communication, and we’ll do all we can to support that balance.

What if I have more than one concern (like anxiety and substance use)?

What if I have more than one concern (like anxiety and substance use)?

It’s very common to face more than one challenge at a time, and Sylvia Brafman is fully equipped to treat multiple issues simultaneously. Dual diagnosis treatment focuses on treating mental health and substance use together. We won’t treat one problem and ignore the other;  your therapy and treatment plan will address all of your concerns in an integrated way.

For instance, if you struggle with anxiety and alcohol use, our clinicians will create a plan that tackles both, since they often affect each other. We have expertise in treating co-occurring disorders, so you’ll get help with every issue you’re facing, all under one roof.

How do I verify insurance coverage?

How do I verify insurance coverage?

Verifying your insurance with us is easy and free. You can either call our patient advocates with your insurance details, or fill out our quick verify insurance form. Once we have your information, we typically can confirm your behavioral health benefits within minutes to hours. We’ll then explain exactly what your plan covers at our facility. For example, we may be able to tell you how many days or sessions are authorized, and what (if any) costs you might be responsible for.

There’s no obligation when you get your insurance verified; it’s purely to give you clarity. If you’re interested in treatment, we encourage you to take this step. Finances should be the least of your worries as you embark on comprehensive treatment.
