What is DPDR Treatment?
DPDR treatment is focused on alleviating symptoms while investigating the causes of derealization and depersonalization. The goal of DPDR treatment is to help you learn to ground yourself in your body and in your surroundings to reconnect you to reality. Treatment will also likely include learning stress management, coping techniques, and unpacking past trauma.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) have established records of treating DPDR. Because DPDR can be a symptom of trauma, trauma-related dissociation treatments (such as EMDR for dissociative disorders) may be a helpful tool. Other treatments that may be utilized include psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness, and lifestyle changes. While talk therapy is the primary treatment, your mental healthcare provider may also suggest medication for depersonalization disorder treatment, such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), anti-anxiety drugs, mood stabilizers, or antipsychotics. Regardless of the program, these are the core therapies used in DPDR treatment.
